S.T.A.R.S.
The Sheriff’s Team of Active Retired Seniors (STARS) was formed in 2000 to provide an opportunity for individuals ages 50 and above to volunteer in Yolo County through a variety of nonhazardous law enforcement activities. The STARS are a nonprofit organization that is overseen by the Sheriff’s Office yet independently operated by dedicated STARS members.
The STARS organization provides opportunities for older adults to share their talents and life experiences by assisting Sheriff’s Office personnel with routine duties which allows paid employee to focus on higher priority work. The STARS are trained in a wide range of areas allowing them to participate in interesting and exciting opportunities while contributing to the safety of the community.
STARS opportunities include:
- Citizen’s patrol
- Vacation house checks for Yolo County citizens
- Decoy placement
- Light traffic control
- Fleet Patrol maintenance
- Emergency support
- Farm theft prevention program
- Community events and education
- Neighborhood Watch programs
- Community forums
- Variety of office and administrative assignments
Applicants must fill out a written application-STARS Application, complete an oral interview, be in good community standing and pass a background check. A valid California drivers license and clear driving record are also required. Applicants need not be retired, but must be at least 50 years of age and commit to a minimum 16 hours a month as well as one short meeting each month.
